The Red Bull Air Race Championship Season Opening Results

After a three-year hiatus, the Red Bull Air Race World Championship has returned. Before the eyes of 100,000 spectators under the blue sky in Abu Dhabi, the most exciting three-way battle unfolded.

Qualifying Rounds

Each pilot flew two laps of the course twice for time attack. Faster time decided the opponent in TOP 12.

Muroya hit a pylon during the first attack. He was under high pressure for the second attack but made it well. He placed 9th in the qualifying flights and proceeded to the final.

The Top 12 Round

Starting this season, a new race format is being used. Two pilots are matched up against each other to compete head to head in six heats, based on their performance in the qualifying rounds.

Muroya (9th after the qualifying round) competed against Hannes Arch (4th after the qualifying round) in Heat 3. A knock-out system was used in the Top 12 Round. Although Muroya flew without making any huge mistake, his opponent, the 2008 champion Hannes Arch, flew his best time and defeated Muroya.

Among the pilots who lost in their heats, the two that were the fastest can move forward to the Super 8. 

Muroya barely missed being a “fastest loser” by 0.24 second and was unable to make to the Super 8. He finished 9th overall in Abu Dhabi.

Muroya’s Comment

Although he did not make to the Super 8, Muroya nevertheless had a crisp, skillful performance from beginning to end in front of huge audience after having a three-year interval. Despite the unsatisfactory results, he was undaunted after the race.

“Hannes flew his best time, and I was not able to surpass him,” said Muroya. “I didn’t achieve my best time, and, unfortunately, I missed the Super 8. Battles are strenuous in the Red Bull Air Race. Once again, I’ve realized that I can’t win unless I keep pushing myself even in the smallest moments. By analyzing engine data, I should be able to figure out why I got behind other pilots. I will improve my flight performance drastically in the next race in Croatia. Having finished the first race of the season, I just want to thank my fans in Japan. There are seven races still left in this season, so please keep watching!”

レッドブル・エアレース・ワールドチャンピオンシップが3年ぶりに復活し、10万人の観客が見守るアブダビの青空の下、興奮極まる三つ巴の闘いが繰り広げられました。

予選ラウンド

各パイロット共にコースを2周するアタックを2回行い、速い方のタイムで決勝1回戦・トップ12の組分けが決定。

室屋はアタック1回目でパイロンヒットし、2回目のアタックにプレッシャーがかかりましたが、落ち着いて周回し、9位で決勝に進出。

トップ12ラウンド

今シリーズから新しいレースフォーマットが採用され、予選の成績によって選手は2名ずつ・6ヒートに分かれ、Head to Headで対戦。

予選9位だった室屋は、Heat 3で予選4位のハンネス・アルヒ選手と対戦。

ノックアウト形式で行われるトップ12ラウンドで、室屋は大きなミスはなかったものの、対する2008年チャンピオンの強敵・ハンネスアルヒ選手は、それまでのベストライムをたたき出し、あえなく敗戦。

各ヒートの敗者のうち最も速かった2名がスーパー8に進出できるFastest Looser枠もわずか＋0.24秒という僅差で逃し、スーパー8進出ならず。9位で初戦を終えました。

室屋コメント

惜しくもスーパー8進出は逃しましたが、3年ぶりのレースで終始、大観衆を前に器用で歯切れのいいパフォーマンスを披露した室屋は、レース終了後、不満足な結果にも毅然した態度を見せ、「ハンネス選手がそれまでのベストタイムを出し、それに対して勝つことが出来ませんでした。自分自身もベストのタイムが出たわけではないので、残念ながらスーパー8に勝ち上がることができませんでした。

レッドブル・エアレースは本当にシビアな戦いなので、本番でささいなところでも勝負をかけていかないとなかなか勝ち上がれない事を改めて実感しました。エンジンデータを分析すれば、遅かった原因が判明するはず。次にクロアチアで開催されるレースでは、飛行パフォーマンスを徹底的に改良していきます。

初戦を終えた今は、とにかく、日本のファンにありがとうと伝えたいです。まだ7レース残っているので、見ててください！」と語りました。
